« Igihondohondo », « jaune » en rwandais, est le surnom de la Forêt de Buhanga situé au Rwanda dans le district de Musanze. Cette forêt a abrité le roi légendaire « Gihanga ». Elle est la source de cultes et de légendes innombrables alimentant la culture rwandaise. Elle devient entièrement jaune lors de la saison sèche. Elle a malheureusement manqué de disparaître, en partie à cause d’un projet de complexe hôtelier qui fut miraculeusement arrêté par décret présidentiel à la demande du « Abiru » de la forêt, Monsieur Joseph Hategekimana. Descendant d’une grande lignée de gardiens de ce sanctuaire, il est l’héritier d’un savoir ancestral transmis dans le secret entre les membres de son clan. Aujourd’hui engagé par la RDB, il en est devenu le garde forestier. Il protège la forêt des braconniers, en même temps qu’il prodigue soins, conseils et rituels ancestraux pour les villageois.

“Igihondohondo” means “yellow” in Rwandan and it is also the name given to the Buhanga Forest in the Musanze district of Rwanda. The forest was home to legendary first king of Rwanda “Gihanga”. It is the source of innumerable deities and legends that run through Rwandan culture. It turns completely yellow during the dry season. Sadly, it almost disappeared entirely, when it was to be cut down to make way for a hotel complex. Miraculously, the forest’s “Abiru”, Joseph Hategekimana, obtained a presidential decree ordering the protection of the forest. Joseph, whose ancestors have long protected this sanctuary, has had the secrets of the forest passed down to him through generations. He now works here as a forest ranger. He protects the forest from poachers and provides healing and advice to the local villagers.
